Complicated Plot:

EX: Desperate Remedies, 1871 (直譯: 《絕望的解藥》大受歡迎的小說)

Sexual Frankness and Irreligiousness:

EX: Jude the Obscure, 1895 (《無名的裘德》, 由於內容反宗教, 對色色的情節描寫太過詳細, 被評為Jude the Obcscene, Hardy the Degenerate)

The mood of Hardy’s poetry is elegiac; differs from the elegiac that Mathew Arnold’s Dover Beach, and Lord Tennyson’s” Break, break, break”, it shows more sterner, more skeptical.

Though Hardy denied being a pessimist, and called himself a “meliorist”, most of his work shows that human can’t control their fate.

l   由於舊時英國的法院人力不足, 所以以前的法律團隊是很辛苦的. 法官和他的團隊會需要到處跑(巡迴), 跑到偏遠地區的法院去審理案件.

故事大綱:

這個故事簡單來說就是身為倫敦一間法律事務所(law firm)中一名協助律師(junior council)的男主角(Charles Raye), 隨著巡迴法院到Melchester來進行法律巡迴. 然後Raye就被鎮上的市集活動所吸引, 並在旋轉木馬上認識了女主角一Anna. 然後女主角一Anna的員工, 也就是有夫之婦的女主角二Mrs. Harnham在找老闆Anna 的時候, 由於人群擁擠, 陰錯陽差的與男主角的Raye的手牽在了一起. 隔天早上Mrs. Harnham 在教堂再一次被Raye煞到, 並造成之後的單相思. 在接下來的日子裡, Raye 和 Anna互相來電, 但是因為工作的緣故, Raye不得不回到了倫敦.

    

    回到倫敦的男主角接著非常納悶, 他寫給Anna的信全都一去不回. 原來Anna根本不識字. 著急的Anna請單相思但是文筆又出奇地細膩的的有夫之婦Mrs. Harnham幫她讀信和回信. 從此之後Mrs. Harnham 就一直幫Anna回男主角的信. 直到最後男主角跟Anna結婚了之後他才發現原來老婆是個文筆幼稚的文盲, 自己一直以來與之通信的是Mrs. Harnham. 頓時男主角悔恨不已, 因為他這才發現自己喜歡的是心思和文筆細膩的Mrs. Harnham, 而不是Anna. 最後男主角給Mrs. Harnham 一個熱情的吻別後就和Anna度蜜月去了.------------------劇終

主要角色:

Charles Raye: A lawyer from London. 倫敦來的律師

Anna: 喜歡Raye的鄉村女孩. 不識字

Mrs. Edith Harnham: 喜歡Raye 的有婦之夫(在某些版本中被和諧成寡婦). 她文筆生動, 心思細膩.

它是一本情色浪漫文學, 就像是《格雷的五十道陰影》.

但是有差別:

色色的部分在《西部巡迴》上用隱喻的, 沒有直接表現出來;

在《格雷》中, 男主角同時喜歡女主角的面貌和心靈; 但在《西部》中, 男主角喜歡女主角A(ANNA)的面貌, 更喜歡女主角B(MRS.HARNHAM) 的心靈.

Sex is implied in OWC, not explicit;

In FSG, the man loves the woman for both her mind and her body (possibly), but the man in OWC has to choose between mind and body, which are represented by two women respectively

Quote: “To his surprise she had progressed but a few lines, in the characters and spelling of a child of eight, and the ideas of a goose.”

重點: Hardy 的作品很多都描寫出主角無法掌控自己的命運. 所以通常他的情節都是有悲劇的成分. On the Western Circuit 中的男主角實際上是跟擁有豐富思想及文采的Mrs. Harnham(代表思想) 所相戀; 然而命運弄人, 他在與沒有智慧上的魅力的ANNA結婚之後才發現這一點.

Many of Hardy’s poems and fiction had the plot of tragedy, the character mostly ended up miserable caused by the fate.
